About Nell Hartwell

Nell Hartwell

I roast coffee. The beans sell through my own Shopify store and on Amazon, and the café where it all started is still open. Each of the three has its own set of books, and I keep all of them myself.

Shopify, Amazon and the café each bring in money in a different shape, and the café adds cash and tips across a counter.

I have priced out bookkeeping services and have not hired one, so the cost of handing the books off is a question I keep returning to.

What the site covers

Clean Books Report answers bookkeeping questions in plain language and scores the software and services behind them. The questions run from what bookkeeping is to what a second company costs in software, and the question archive keeps every one in a single list.

On the software side, a ranked shortlist covers general accounting tools. Payout sync apps carry Shopify sales into the ledger, and the sales tax picks cover businesses that ship to many states.

For the café, there are café accounting tools that read the till. For handing the work off, there are outsourced bookkeeping options.

How scoring works

Every tool and service is scored on a published rubric, and the rank follows the score. The weights, the criteria and the evidence rules sit on one page: how a score is built.

How the site is funded

Some vendors pay us to be included on Clean Books Report. That payment never affects the rankings or the review itself.
